Collegeshaala's JEE Main and Advanced test series app provides unlimited mock tests, targeted chapter-wise preparation and real-time progress tracking — a comprehensive, personalised route to exam readiness.

Challenge

Mock tests on online platforms are crucial for simulating real exam conditions: they let students practise under time constraints and get familiar with the exam format. They also assess knowledge by surfacing strengths and weaknesses, which guides where to focus.

But effective platforms for that kind of test preparation are scarce.

Goals

  • Help students practise mock tests for IIT/JEE and other major exams.
  • Bring previous years' question papers together on a single platform.
  • Give students a detailed analysis of their preparation and improvement over time.

Purpose

A comprehensive app at as little as ₹17 per month can meaningfully help higher-secondary students prepare for IIT/JEE. It becomes a one-stop platform: the resources they need to prepare effectively, plus detailed analysis of how they are performing.

User research

We ran online research to understand users' needs and mindsets. Engineering students aiming for top-tier colleges struggle to find personalised solutions for entrance exam preparation. Even with offline tutoring and counselling, there is a gap in understanding the process and building a systematic approach — which makes admission preparation a tedious task.

The qualitative half came from a student survey, which fed the insights below.

Findings from the student survey

Competitive analysis

Testbook.com — comprehensive content, with a wide range of study materials, practice questions and mock tests; detailed performance analytics so users can track progress; a mobile app for studying on the go; and coverage of competitive exams well beyond JEE. Against that, some users find the premium pricing steep, and opinion on the interface is mixed.

PracticeMock.com — the same broad strengths: wide-ranging study material, practice questions and mock tests, detailed analytics, a mobile app, and coverage of exams beyond JEE. Pricing is again the main complaint, with the interface a matter of taste.

Problem and proposed solution

The problem. We only offered mock tests covering a complete question paper. Attempting one is high-effort and time-consuming, and only 10% of paid users had attempted a test on the platform.

The solution. Chapter-wise tests, to improve retention. Smaller units of content mean students can use the platform on a daily basis rather than blocking out hours at a time.

What users needed

Students need clear guidance, effective exam strategies and reliable study materials. They want resources that simplify the process, reduce confusion and help them hit their academic goals.

  • Clarification on exam preparation strategies.
  • Information on which topics matter for the exams.
  • Knowledge of the weightage assigned to each question and chapter.
  • Performance analysis tools for better self-assessment.
  • Authentic, trustworthy study material.
  • Regular chapter updates, to stay current with the syllabus.

Functions

Practice mock tests. Mock test → test 1, test 2, test 3 and so on → take the test → view the report analysis.

Practice past year question papers. Choose the year — JEE 2018, JEE 2019 and so on — and work through the paper.

Stakeholder decisions

  • Users get one free attempt before payment, as a promotion.
  • Tapping "take test" redirects students to Gradezy.
  • If the user hasn't paid, or their trial test is used up, they are redirected to Gradezy with white-labelling and API integration.

Information architecture

I built an organisational chart covering the various user journeys — paid, subscribed, logged in — so that each user profile mapped to the features that mattered for it. Because so many components determine the user flow, a visual representation was necessary to make the journey legible.

Final UI

JEE preparation streak. Motivates students to keep practising for upcoming entrance exams without breaking the chain.

Mock tests. Unlimited tests for JEE Main, JEE Advanced, BITSAT, 12th boards and other engineering entrance exams, with the number of questions, duration, maximum marks and subjects shown up front so students can pick the right one.

Past year question papers. A strategic upgrade addressing time constraints and incomplete chapters. Smaller, focused modules for subject and chapter-wise tests make preparation more efficient and more motivating.

Refer and earn. Persuasive messaging, a clear incentive — one month free — and a straightforward design, to get users spreading the word.

The app also has distinct states for users who aren't logged in and for users whose subscription has ended, where most screens stay the same as the paid version and only the gated ones change.
